When we first started designing skates, we thought we understood what mattered most.
We were wrong.
At the beginning, we focused heavily on what people see first:
- colorways
- silhouette
- visual identity
- overall aesthetic appeal
And to be fair, those things do matter.
But once people actually started skating in the product, we realized something important:
⇒ good-looking skates and good-feeling skates are not always the same thing.
What Looks Good Doesn’t Always Skate Well
One of the biggest misconceptions in product design is assuming appearance and performance naturally align.
Sometimes they do.
But sometimes:
- softer materials reduce stability
- certain shapes affect ankle support
- visual details interfere with functionality
Things that look great in product photos can feel completely different once someone starts moving in them.
That was one of our earliest lessons.
Customers Notice Things Brands Miss
When customers started using the skates regularly, patterns appeared quickly.
People consistently mentioned things we initially underestimated:
- how secure the fit felt
- how much ankle support affected confidence
- how wheel feel changed the skating experience
And interestingly, many beginners cared less about advanced features and more about:
⇒ whether skating felt approachable and stable.
That shifted our perspective significantly.
We Had to Rethink What “Comfort” Meant
Early on, we assumed comfort meant:
- softer padding
- lighter pressure
- more flexibility
But in skating, comfort often comes from support.
A skate that feels “soft” immediately may actually become more uncomfortable over time if:
the foot moves too much
the ankle lacks structure
stability feels inconsistent
That realization changed how we approached future product development.
Product Development Is Mostly Iteration
People sometimes imagine skate design as one big creative breakthrough.
In reality, it’s usually:
- testing
- adjusting
- re-testing
- noticing small issues
- improving gradually
A lot of the work happens in details people never consciously notice.
But those details shape how the product ultimately feels.
The Biggest Lesson We Learned
The most important thing we learned was this:
⇒ you don’t fully understand a product until people actually use it in real life.
Not in controlled environments.
Not in product photos.
Not in prototypes.
Real-world use reveals everything.
Final Thoughts
Looking back, we’re glad our first designs weren’t perfect.
Because the mistakes taught us things we couldn’t have learned any other way.
And honestly, many of the improvements we care about today exist because of what didn’t work the first time.
